Artist Michael Knapstein
Parfrey's Glen Archival pigment print $595 Curator's Award for Best Artist Artist Statement I have spent the majority of my life in an often overlooked part of the country that many people know only as “fly-over territory.” After spending several decades photographing my way around the world, I realized that I had not fully explored the visual potential that was literally in my own backyard. So in recent years, I have dedicated myself to photographing the natural beauty of my home state of Wisconsin and her neighbors. It has proven to be a truly eye-opening experience. If I have been successful in my pursuit, I hope my work helps you see the Midwest landscape in a whole new light. This image was taken in a difficult-to-reach area near Devil's Lake State Park just outside of Baraboo, Wisconsin. In an area where you have to continually look down and watch your step, I found this image by looking up overhead. ___________________________________________
